The Confederados

confederados_cover This is a book about a group of southerners dissatisfied with the outcome of the American Civil War, who immigrated to Brazil. Arriving from Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina, they formed a community that endured for 125 years. They kept their language and customs, while prospering within and contributing to the larger Brazilian economy and society.

I co-authored and co-edited The Confederados with my brother, Dr. Cyrus B. (Sonny) Dawsey III, professor of Geography at Auburn University. A second brother, Dr. John C. Dawsey, Director of Graduate Studies and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, wrote a chapter in the English language version and took the lead in the Portuguese language revised edition of the book. What could possibly be more fun than working with my brothers? Playing soccer with them. Oh, when we were young! Several distinguished colleagues contributed chapters and helped in other ways on the book. Much thanks to Michael Conniff, William C. Griggs, Laura Jarnagin, Wayne Flynt, Michael B. Montgomery, Cecil Ataide Melo, Eugene Harter, James M. Gravois, Elizabeth J. Weisbrod, and Zilmar Marcos.
